Length of Course: 4 days

Overview:
This four-day course provides the student with the knowledge to interact with a UNIX operating system. Students will develop their UNIX skills with hands-on experience on Sun’s Solaris OS, the most popular UNIX operating system in the world.

Prerequisites:
Prior to attending this class, students should have the following experience:

• Basic computer knowledge
• Basic keyboarding skills

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

• Describe basic UNIX concepts such as logging in and changing their password.
• Use and customize Common Desktop Environment.
• Navigate a UNIX file system.
• Manipulate files by viewing, filtering, copying, moving and deleting.
• Protect their files using UNIX file permissions.
• Use the vi editor to edit text files.
• Control UNIX processes (programs) including using the at and crontab commands to schedule processes to run in the future.
• Use variables, aliases and history to improve performance.
• Use a variety of file compression commands.
• Use networking commands such as telnet and ftp.
• Read shell scripts.
